"Close your eyes and concentrate on breathing". Differences between bronchial asthma and BPCO.

breathing well

The Paris International Conference on Climate shows the continuous increase in data on pollution, an idea to reflect on the future of the air we breathe and on our lungs.

Experts recognise that exposure to air pollutants increases significantly the probability of contracting numerous diseases mainly affecting the respiratory apparatus. Children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk.

What is the difference between bronchial asthma and BPCO ? What does BPCO mean?

Bronchial asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airtract characterised by recurrent respiratory problems. During an asthma attack the lining of the airtract  thickens, muscles are contracted and the mucous obstructs the respiratory tract making breathing difficult. These alterations lead to the appearance of the symptoms of asthma… wheezing, cough, tightness in the chest, feeling of lack of air. The factors that can cause an asthma attack are numerous, for example viral infections, the exposure to allergens (such as dust mites or pollen), smoke, atmospheric pollution. The symptoms of asthma are variable, often deteriorating  during the night and in the early hours of the morning and the severity of the disease varies from individual to individual.

The Bronco Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Pattern (BPCO).

The BPCO is a chronic respiratory complaint characterized by a progressive obstruction of the airtract and the destruction of the pulmonary tissue that makes breathing difficult. The most important risk factor of BPCO is cigarette smoke, but also occupational exposure to irritating substances and environmental pollution have been recognised as among the causes of the disease. BPCO manifests itself with cough and chronic catarrh and with a progressive shortness of breath or feeling a shortage of air (dyspnoea), first during the attack and later in the more advanced stages, even at rest, thus causing strong limitations in  carrying out normal daily activities. In the course of the illness relapses characterised by increased symptoms may occur, followed by an increase of cough and catarrh, wheezing, shortness of breath and sometimes fever. Given the progressive nature of BPCO, diagnosis and early treatment are essential for the prevention of complications and of clinical relapses, whose acute deterioration can also lead to hospitalisation.

Good habits for living "breathing" better.

The curative properties of Tabiano’s  sulphurous-sulphate-calcium-magnesium water have been known for decades and are used in various diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tracts.

A "strong" sulphurous Spa water which with its vasodilatory effects and typical antioxidants of the sulphurous water, determines an important cytoprotective action and increase of the mechanical and biological defences of the respiratory tract.

The other major components of Tabiano’s  water (sulphates, calcium and magnesium in primis) modulate and sometimes enhance these actions, thus contributing to the curative efficacy in various chronic and recurrent upper tract disorders (rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngo-laryngitis and otitis) and lower  tract (catarrhal bronchitis and obstructive, bronchial ectasia, etc.).

Summing up, 6 good habits for living and breathing better:

  • Come to Tabiano’s  Spa at least once a year for a cycle of inhalation treatments
  • After 6 months repeat at home the thermal treatment carried out at Tabiano using our bottled water
  • Carry out throughout the year an accurate nasal cleansing , using for the nasal wash our Nasoclean
  • Be more active
  • Breathe with lips slightly open in order to control the frequency and the duration of the breath
  • Optimism comes through breathing !
